Back up, recover, and move your library

Create a checked backup and distinguish moving, reconnecting, and cloning.

On this page

Create a product backup before updates, device migration, or substantial organization. Copying a few source files does not replace a complete recoverable backup.

Create and inspect a backup

  1. Open Vault and recovery in Settings.
  2. Check the current library identity, location, and latest usable backup.
  3. Create a product backup and wait for file and database checks.
  4. Confirm the backup passed and record its location.

Backups include source files and a consistency-checked database copy, but not keys or regenerable caches. Store them in a trusted location.

Check before restoring

Choose the target backup and run the restoration preflight. Confirm the backup and library match before proceeding. Actual location switching and restoration require the desktop application; a browser development preview is not a completed restoration.

Afterward, open sources, history, and outputs. Configure or confirm model keys and device authorizations locally.

Choose the right location action

ActionWhen to use it
Reconnect locationReconnect the same library after moving its folder in Finder.
Move VaultCopy, verify, and switch locations while retaining the original as a fallback.
Clone contentCreate an independent copy without keys, authorizations, or running tasks.

These operations stop writes and validate first. Follow their prompts rather than simultaneously moving directories in Finder.

Handle recovery items

The recovery center lists conflicts and items needing attention. Read their effects before repair. Do not overwrite conflicts solely on the basis of file modification times.

Next step

Use data migration when you only need to transfer conversation history.

Configure model, media, and connected services as needed. See each article for requirements.
